- Fire Info | Valley at Winter Park HOA
Firewise Community Firewise USA is a national program that emphasizes community involvement and provides important information for residents to reduce the risk of wildland fire igniting homes. The Valley at Winter Park has been a Firewise Community since 2013. The proximity to large tracts of wildland and the staggering Lodgepole Pine die-off from the mountain pine beetle epidemic makes the threat of wildfire very real. Firewise shows us how to adapt and live in a high risk area by helping us proactively reduce wildfire risks. The Grand County Wildfire Council gives us local information to help us keep up to date on activities (chipping days), opportunities (cost sharing grants) and burn days, and they promote Firewise. Being Firewise is beneficial for your property and your neighbors. At the Valley at Winter Park, we all strive to respect our neighbors and to do our part to maintain our properties. Below, you will find 3 different categories of information that we have divided into helpful sections! You can easily register, download documents, and find out much more about our Firewise Community. Wildfire Facts Home & Land Owners Home Construction

Home & Lot Owners After purchasing your land, there are mandatory VWP HOA requirements to keep your lot in order. Regular maintenance of removing hazardous fuels from your land (sick, dead and clustered trees as well as junipers) will reduce how hot a fire will burn and how quickly it may spread. Even though you are unsure as to where your house will be placed on your lot, you can still mitigate the fire potential on your land, and get to know what wildflowers and bushes grow on your lot and where they shouldn't grow and be planted (like next to structures and decks). Below are 9 Links to learn more Lot Maintenance Click here to view the HOA's Lot Maintenance Policy for slash piles and the updated HOA letter with further guidelines you're asked to follow. Slash Piles Click here for Grand County's burning guidelines and permits for ONLY burning them in the winter, with daily permission. Juniper Removal Be aware that Junipers are highly incendiary and our HOA's guidance is removal of them from lots (noted in the updated HOA letter) Thinning Trees See below for more info on tree management. Landowner's Guide to Thinning Trees Lodgepole Pine Management ! NEED LINKs Mary! Remove Dead Trees Clic k here and he re to view the HOA's Lot Maintenance Policy for dead standing and down tree removal or stacking. Q-tip and Concerning Trees We promote (here) removal of "Q-tip trees" (over 100 yrs old and needles only at the top ) and trees able to fall onto and block roads from traffic/evacuation . Smart Landscaping Use rock instead of mulch. Don't plant next to or under dwellings & decks. ALWAYS get ADRC approval for improvements. Safety Safety is important for us as a community let alone as a mountain community where wildfires, snow storms, and dangerous wildlife exists. This is even more challenging when 911 First Responders could be 10-20 minutes away. Please take your and our safety seriously while noting that high quality medical/hospital services could require a 1.5 hr car or ambulance drive as or a flight for life helicopter ride. Please, drive cautiously at all times as people are walking, pets are roaming, trees & vehicles might be blocking roads and wildlife can be in the way. If you see something (dangerous or threatening) - say something (via the WhatsApp Urgent Messaging Group) and/or call 911. Urgent Comms This WhatsApp Group is to Message the Community due to any threatening or urgent situations. Be Fire Ready Yes... Be Firewise - Be Aware! - Owner Directory | VWP HOA
The Owner Directory The Owner Directory is an Opt-Out listing of owner names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers. The directory is intended to help the community know how to contact one another for non urgent or non community-wide social matters. We have Urgent Messaging and Social Media tools outlined in the Community Links / Communications section of the website. The Owner Directory shouldn't be used to send mass emails to the community (as the Social Page is there for that) nor to sent individual complaints about other owners in the community or the community as a whole. Regular HOA and Water District meetings are where to voice concerns verbally, in chat windows and via the email addresses for the HOA's Board of Directors and Water District. So please refrain from use such as that or we'll have to reconsider posting it. The Owner Directory is here , but it is password protected. Please join the Urgent Messaging WhatsApp group or send an Email to Board@ValleyAtWinterPark.org to get the current password (as it will be changed occasionally).

More Coloradans than ever live in an area that is at high risk for wildfire. Here are some facts that we hope will inform our residents about their safety. Wildland Urban Interface Here in the VWP we live in what is called the wildland urban interface or WUI. We live in a beautiful forest and get to see pronghorn sheep, elk and moose, but that comes with extra personal responsibility. It is concerning that megafires (fires that burn over 100,000 acres) are no longer novel in Colorado. A combination of climate change, drought, less precipitation and fierce winds are the causes of our increased wildfire risk. We take widlfires & their prevention seriously! Recent 2020 Fires The total loss from 2 major fires in Grand County (both within 10 miles of VWP) in 2020 alone were approximately over 210,000 acres and where still burning out of control as late that year as November 1. The East Troublesome fire spread over 100,000 acres in a single night, at a rate of over 6,000 acres per hour, which was over 100 acres per minute and more than 75mph. 366 homes and 2 human lives were lost in that fire alone. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY !! Live, walk, tow, build, landscape, mitigate, thin, chainsaw and burn with both wildfires and your neighbors in mind. Wind and dry conditions are terrible to start fires in. If you're concerned about what you see, just call the Grand County police and let them respond then call the fire department if necessary. Don't think twice or feel bad... your neighbors in the county thank you! Wildfire Facts
